RIP Iurie Darie



Romanian actor Iurie Darie dies at 83 after long, painful battle with disease.

After an extensive period of suffering which was endured in various hospitals across Bucharest, Romanian actor Iurie Darie, 83, died on Friday. His wife Anca Pandrea stood by him till his last moments. Over the past year Mr. Darie had been hospitalized several times with serious medical problems.

Iurie Darie was born on March 14, 1929, in Vadul Rascov, Soroca County, Kingdom of Romania. At an early age he joined the art world. He was admitted to both the Institute of Fine Arts and Academy of Theatre and Film, however he chose the last one from which he graduated in 1952. Mr. Darie was taught and educated by some of the greatest Romanian actors and teachers, such as Mihai Popescu and Marietta Sadova.

The actor was admitted several times to “Bagdasar-Arsenie” hospital of Bucharest because of not being able to breathe on his own. Iurie Darius died after fighting his heart problems for a several years.

Iurie Darius had a remarkable career that includes roles in over 40 film productions. Starting with his film debut in the 1953 film “Nepotii gornistului” ending in 1999 with “The Death Triangle”. He appeared one final time in the TV film “Numai iubirea” in 2004.

Throughout his career, Iurie Darius has worked with some of the most important filmmakers of 20th century Romanian: Ion Popescu Gopo, Mircea Dragan Nicolaescu, George Vitanidis.

His career in theater was related to the Comedy Theatre in Bucharest. He played under the baton of director Lucian Giurchescu and David Esrig. He had as partners Dinica actors, Marin Moraru, Mircea Albulescu, Dem Radulescu, Sanda Toma, Vasilica Tastaman, Stela Popescu, Silviu Stanculescu. Among his credits include "Troilus and Cressida" by William Shakespeare, and "Shadow" by Evgenii Svart, both directed by David Esrig.

Iurie Darie was noted for television programs for children, where he showcased his ability to draw, sometimes with both hands.

In 2009, Iurie Darie was awarded the Excellence Award for Lifetime Achievement at the Romanian Comedy Festival – festCO, and, in March of this year, Iurie Darie received the Gopo Lifetime Achievement Award, and on June 1st he received a star on the Alley of Fame - Capital Walk of Fame.
